About Us.

Since its inception in 1976, UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal (Comm/Ent) has served as one of the nation’s first law journals dedicated to the field of Communications and Entertainment law. Now, over forty years later, Comm/Ent has expanded its scope to other areas of law, including, but not limited to, Intellectual Property, Data Privacy, Licensing, Employment and Labor Law, Constitutional Rights, and International and Comparative Law.

Comm/Ent’s publications include a mix of articles and notes written by law professors, legal practitioners, and law students across the country. These articles encompass a vast array of legal issues, which are at the forefront of communications and entertainment law. Publications have addressed issues relating to radio and television broadcasting, film, sports, labor, cable television, music recordings, copyrights, trademarks, patents, the First Amendment, satellite communications, computer technology, the Internet, advertising, telecommunications, and commercial speech, just to name a few.

Washington and Lee School of Law Library, which publishes the most widely-followed law review rankings, listed Comm/Ent as the nation’s fifth best student-edited law journal in Communications and Media Law and twelfth best in Arts, Entertainment, and Sports Law in 2021. With the second highest subscription at UC Law SF, it is no surprise that many await the Comm/Ent’s semi-annual publication with anticipation.

In 2022, Comm/Ent launched its new website with the primary goal of increasing accessibility to scholarship on communications and entertainment law. As part of this expansion, Comm/Ent created a blog for news updates, short essays, and opinion pieces on all things communications and entertainment, posted to the website’s “Online Content” page. In March 2023, Comm/Ent’s blog ranked fifth on Feedspot’s “20 Best Entertainment Law Blogs and Websites”.

In essence, Comm/Ent strives to provide a platform for students and scholars to take part in shaping the legal landscape in communications and entertainment law. The world is in a constant state of flux, which makes Comm/Ent essential to scholars, practitioners, and academics as they seek to keep apprised of current views within their fields of interest.
